Socially Responsible Investing

More and more investors are coming to realize that their investment decisions have significant social, environmental, and political impacts on their communities and the world. That has caused a dramatic shift in the way individuals and institutions think about where they should invest their money. Today the field of Socially Responsible Investing has been transformed from little more than a concept to a growth industry representing over $2 trillion in assets.

In 1972, John Harrington pioneered Socially Responsible Investing in California by writing the first state report on South African apartheid and U.S. corporate involvement. This report resulted in one of the largest divestitures in the nations's history, ultimately aiding in the democratization of South Africa.

Ten years later John founded Harrington Investments, Inc on the premise that what people invest in can have a huge impact on governments, laws, economics, and on creating more just societies around the world.

Today, Harrington Investments continues to be committed to insuring our client’s assets are invested in companies that have a positive impact on society.  We use both inclusionary and exclusionary investment criteria to develop socially responsible portfolios, and shareholder advocacy to influence the policies of corporations owned by Harrington Investments and our clients.
