For over twenty-five years, Harrington Investments has been a leading advisory firm in socially responsible investing and shareholder advocacy. Our mission is to provide highly personalized asset management services to our clients that reflect a commitment to superior financial results, while promoting positive environmental, ethical, and social change.

EQUITY AND FIXED INCOME

Harrington Investments uses a top-down, bottom-up fundamental approach to portfolio management. Our top-down approach looks at emerging trends in the world, such as the growth of clean tech, peak oil, and population demographics, to identify sectors of the economy that we believe will prosper in the coming years. Our bottom-up approach looks at the financial health of companies in these sectors to try and identify the leaders in the emerging trends of tomorrow.

Our proprietary stock portfolio consists primarily of large cap domestic companies. Mid-cap stocks and foreign securities may be included in our portfolio if they meet current standards for safety and liquidity as well as the client's financial and social goals. Only equities that pass our social screens and meet our financial criteria are included in our proprietary stock portfolio.

Our fix-income sector includes investment-grade corporate and municipal bonds, US government and agency securities, convertible debentures, and preferred stocks. All corporate bonds and preferred stocks must come from companies that have passed our social screens. We do not invest in derivatives, or short stock, trade on margin, or trade speculative securities.

INVESTMENT CRITERIA

Harrington Investments maintains a proprietary securities list of approximately 70 companies, which is updated on a regular basis by our Investment Committee.

The social and financial screening process at Harrington Investments consists of three  phases. First, we use negative screens to eliminate all companies that manufacture tobacco or weapons, companies involved in gambling, companies that produce nuclear power (exclusionary criteria).

In the second stage of our social screening process we evaluate the environmental record of the company, the social impact of the company’s products and operations, and the company’s internal governance (inclusionary criteria).

Finally, in the third stage we analysis the financial strength of those companies that have passed the first two criteria. Only stocks that have consistent earnings growth, are fairly valued, and are perceived to have long-term sustainable growth prospects are included on the list.

All stock recommendations by the Investment Committee are subject to periodic social and environmental review, and are potential targets for shareholder advocacy.

ASSET ALLOCATION

Harrington Investments uses a disciplined approach to asset allocation, sector allocation, and equity selection. Our strategic allocation approach helps match your risk tolerance to your expected return.
